How did it come to this?

|

Can someone please tell me exactly when I entered this parallel dimension? It's a familiar and yet strange place, where we have no idea when (if ever) there will be a new Star Trek film or TV show, but things are moving along smoothly for not one, but two Star Wars TV shows?

I've been on a bit of a Star Trek kick recently, thanks to the wife's purchase of the original series box set. It's been a while since I've seen a full episode of the original series, but damn, it still holds up. This is a totally objective view of the matter, I assure you. It is in no way colored by the perceptions of a young child who's just discovered this "Star Trek" show airing after all the Saturday morning cartoons. Not at all.

But, even allowing for that, it's really good. The actors are not un-talented, the scripts are not awful. Taken as what it is, a TV show from the late 1960s, it's not bad at all. The delivery may seem odd to a modern audience, the references and mores dated, but if you think about it, today's viewer is as far removed from this show as our grandparents were from the sinking of the Maine. What should astonish us is just how well it holds up despite being almost four decades old.
