Be Careful What You Wish for

I suppose anyone who tosses things up on a website has some aspiration towards (or delusions of) a wider audience. Why else would you go to the trouble of putting something on the internet if you didn't want someone else to read it? Insane rambling for your eyes only are much easier to commit to a paper journal in a zip-lock bag concealed under the flayed house pets beneath your bed. No HTML tags, no XML feeds, no comment spam, no track-back spam, just the skritch skritch skritch of your pen on parchment in time to your barely contained maniacal glee. No, if you put it on the web, you are entertaining the crazed notion that what you write may possibly be of interest to some other human being on the face of the planet. You just haven't found them yet.

With that goal in mind, it can be frustrating to have the following exchange with every friend and relative you've ever met:

"You have a website?"

"Yes, I have a website. On the web even."

"I didn't know that. What was the URL?"

"It's in my sig. Wombatzone.com. Yeah, I can see where that might not be so memorable."

"Well, yeah, I visited it three years ago, and it had like two things on it. Why don't you update it?"

"Sigh. Grrr. Sigh."

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not all that torn up that people aren't flocking to my semi-coherent rants about Canadian ballistic missile defense perfidy. It's niche, I'll grant you, and when you consider the whole enterprise may be one step up from vanity publishing anyway, well, maybe it's not that big of a deal. Indeed, once you achieve that perspective, you begin to think, yeah, maybe I'll just toss up an update whenever I get a chance. No big deal. Then someone you gave the "no really, I have a website, why does no one ever check it" lecture to a month back asks "Hey, I've been checking your website for a while now, and were you planning on actually updating it this quarter? Year? Decade?"

One day, I'll learn to be careful what I wish for, or at least to keep my mouth shut while wishing it.

I promise, more content soon.

Yay, more content! One day I'll post on my LiveJournal regularly (OK, probably not). :) I just picked up a new laptop (the motherboard and hard drive went out in the desktop, so I finally broke down and got the laptop).
